Robin Williams, the legendary comedian and actor, sadly took his own life at the age of 63. Although he is no longer with us, he will always be remembered for the various characters he portrayed on the big screen ranging from Peter Pan to Patch Adams. Though Williams was memorable in performance as a comedian and screenplay, some of his most endearing traits came through philanthropic efforts which included serving on the board of Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, providing relief to the homeless, Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders fighting Ebola, Heifer International, Livestrong, Prince's Rainforest Project, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial and UNICEF.
Here are select video clips of the great actor Robin Williams:
Popeye (1980) - Robin Williams as Popeye
Seize the Day (1986) - Robin Williams as Tommy Willhelm
Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) - Robin Williams as Adrian Cronauer
Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
Williams transformed himself into a loveable housekeeper, switching outfits and personalities showcased the actor's wit and loveable spirit.
Good Will Hunting (1997) One of Williams’ best performance came during his role in Good Will Hunting (1997). This role featured Williams as a therapist treating William Hunting, played by Matt Damon. He guided Will Hunting through his difficult struggle of growing up in a poor Boston community and helped him truly harness his underlying genius. Robin Williams won the Academy Award for best supporting actor in this brilliant role.
Some of the Robin's classic lines during the film included:
“You'll have bad times, but it'll always wake you up to the good stuff you weren't paying attention to.”
"You're not perfect, sport. And let me save you the suspense. This girl you met, she isn't perfect either. But the question is: whether or not you're perfect for each other. That's the whole deal.”
Another notable Robin Williams role is that of Jack Powell, a child diagnosed with a rare disorder causing him to age rapidly. This dramatic movie left audiences in tears through the stunning way in which Robin Williams’ embodied the character.
These roles are just a small tribute to the work of Robin Williams. Williams will continue to remembered for years to come for his contribution to the entertainment industry and philanthropic efforts. Buzz Aldrin (former astronaught) shared on his facebook page the struggle that depression and addiction play in people's lives referencing Williams.
"The torment of depression and the complications of addiction that accompany it affect millions, including myself and family members before me -- my grandfather committed suicide before I was born and my mother the year before I went to the moon -- along with hundreds of veterans who come to a similar fate each year," Aldrin wrote. "As individuals and as a nation we need to be compassionate and supportive of all who suffer and give them the resources to face life."
